Cleaning stonework of the East Lockinge War Memorial
One Fifty recently cleaned the War Memorial at East Lockinge in Oxfordshire. The stonework of the memorial had become badly stained by a build-up of organic growth and dirt, so OneFifty was drafted in to carry out a professional clean ready for the 2024 Remembrance Day.
About the memorial
East Lockinge lost 14 young men in the war and the memorial stands as a tribute to those boys, and a reminder of all those who have given their lives in the service to their country since.
The memorial consists of a lantern topped column, on a three-stepped octagonal base, which sits on a large tapered octagonal plinth displaying names and dedications. Careful cleaning helps ensure these inscriptions can be read. It's also important to remove dirt and algae as these contaminants can cause long-term damage to the stone.
handle with care
These old stone structures need to be treated with extreme care and professional cleaning is often the preferred option. Our experienced team used the gentle power of pressurised steam to remove the dirt and algae. We also applied a biocidal wash to help inhibit future regrowth.
An honour and a privilege
The memorial looked absolutely stunning once we had finished. A former Major in the British Army, OneFifty’s director Andy Morris still feels a strong connection with the forces. He said, “It was an honour to be entrusted with the cleaning of the East Lockinge memorial to help ensure its well-maintained appearance reflects the gratitude and respect felt by so many on remembrance day."
