Emergency Christmas Eve clean-up at the MEM

Category: Graffiti

The Jet Washing Company was called out at the last minute on Christmas Eve to carry out an emergency clean up on Bristol Rovers memorial gates.

Vandals had defaced the Memorial gates at the MEM by scrawling ‘Merry Christmas from CSF’ (a reference to a group of hard-core Bristol City fans) and other offensive slogans across the entrance pillars in bright red spray paint.

The Bristol Rovers memorial sports ground is dedicated to the memory of local rugby players who were killed during two world wars. Not surprisingly the vandalism, which seemed particularly callous given the time of year, caused wide spread anger and disappointment amongst fans of both sides.

Craig Richardson, head of operations at Bristol Sport, contacted The Jet Washing Company around lunch time on the 24th, just as we were packing up for Christmas. The graffiti needed to be removed as quickly as possible so that the offensive slogans did not remain in situ throughout the Christmas period. We understood that this was a critical issue and pulled out all the stops to get the job done straight away.

Our unique Steam Plus jet washing system delivers pressurised steam at 150 degrees Centigrade and 200 barr, a combination that delivers effective cleaning yet is still gentle on the stone. It allowed us to remove the paint without damaging the surface - which is critical when dealing with precious historic stone monuments and buildings.

John Lansdown, vice chairman of Bristol City, said he was appalled by the vandalism and promised life time bans from Ashton Gate to those responsible. Bristol Rovers spokesman Keith Brookman called on fans from both sides to help name and shame the culprits. Supporters from both clubs joined together in strongly condemning the act on twitter.

The Jet Washing Company was delighted to have been able to help with the Christmas Eve clean-up and ensure a more peaceful graffiti free Christmas for the MEM. We also donated a percentage of our fee to the charity Help the Homeless.
